Bedrock Wine Company: Tasting on the Sonoma Square

Bedrock Wine Company is a relatively new winery (2007) yet with very deep roots in the business. Morgan Twain-Peterson is the owner/winemaker and began his journey being exposed to wine and wine tasting as a young boy. When he was five, he crafted his own Pinot Noir! He grew up with the wine business as his father is the founder of Ravenswood Winery. Morgan is distinct among winemakers in that he is a Master of Wine. This is an intense training program that requires several years of study. He is one of 45 MWs in the U.S. and is one of only two winemakers in California to carry that designation.

Bedrock is dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. This mission and vision contributes to the quality of the wine. Quality is what you will enjoy when you visit the tasting room located on the Sonoma Square. It is a peaceful, relaxing space to experience the well-made wines.

There are several things to like and appreciate about the wines of Bedrock. One, as mentioned, is the quality of the wine. This is a winery whose wines have received many highly rated reviews from Wine Spectator, Vinous, and The Wine Advocate. That in itself is a noteworthy accomplishment. Next, the portfolio is diverse. The lineup of varietals includes sparkling, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Zinfandel, Field Blends, Syrah, and Cabernet. They are all well-crafted and display rich fruit and a great mouth feel. Last but not least, the wines are well-priced. For example, recently I picked up my Sauvignon Blanc which was only $19 a bottle. Well worth the money as it was bright, crisp and refreshing!

The tasting room itself is the historic Joseph Hooker House. It has only been open since July of last year. It is a quaint saltbox home with limited space so appointments are required. You will have a choice to sit inside or out; either place is a relaxing environment to sip and savor the wines of Bedrock. The standard tasting is $30 for 5 wines, starting with a sparkling and progressing through the portfolio. The bigger challenge may be what to take home!

Enjoy!
