Seavey Vineyard: Tucked Away and Worth the Drive

Picturesque views, mountainsides and vines, Seavey Vineyard is tucked out of the way and well worth the time to journey to Conn Valley to visit.  The wines are the main event with great structure and a minerality that runs through the line-up.  This is red territory, so there is not a white to be found — just be prepared for well-crafted wine that will age very gracefully.  I opened their 2007 Cabernet a while ago; and, quite frankly, it knocked my socks off.  Smooth, rich and complex, it was a delight to drink.  I had to go back again to explore more.

There were four wines to taste.  Alex Kajani, who is responsible for hospitality, is well-versed in the process and the history of the property.  He easily guides you around the property, filling in the details of process for the winery and how these excellent wines are made.  Philippe Melka is the winemaker.  Just recently, he was ranked number one on a list of the top 100 most influential winemakers in the U.S. today.  His list of wineries with which he consults includes many successful wineries, yet Seavey was his first venture in the United States.

These wines are more “Bordeaux” in nature and show great secondary flavors.  In these wines, there will be floral notes and more earthy flavors, along with leather, cigar box, and tobacco.  Quite frankly, it is pleasurable just to sit and explore the nose.  Not to be fooled though, there is plenty of fruit yet it is in depth rather than intensity.

The property is rustic in nature, and the tour is around the grounds with the history to be told at every turn.  This winery reaches back to the 1800s, and it is fun to step back in time.  It is in beautiful surroundings.

Alex is the Director of Sales and Marketing, and he’ll share the experience and the property with you.  His approach is to provide all the information you want to greater appreciate and understand the winery and their approach.  One thing that was very clear is that Seavey is committed to producing the best wine possible from the land they farm.  It is 100% estate wine and a clear expression of the vines that grow there.  Please find a bottle and explore if you can’t get to the valley and visit.

Cheers!
